Opportunity Summary:

The Dean is the academic leader and chief executive officer of the David Crawford School of Engineering (DCSE). The hired candidate will report to the Vice President for Academic Affairs & Dean of Faculty. The Dean is responsible for administration of school instruction and works closely with the greater university community, faculty, staff and students. Additionally the Dean directs research, and outreach and engagement activities to further the implementation of the University Strategic Plan. The David Crawford School of Engineering was named on May 11, 1998 in honor of David C. Crawford ’52, and his father David Crawford, ’22, professional engineers whose careers exemplify Alden Partridge’s vision of civil engineers as the builders of America’s future. The school is ABET accredited.

In keeping with the proud tradition of the university, the Dean will be asked to wear a military uniform; the position carries with it the rank of Colonel in the Vermont State Militia.

The Dean of the DCSE will report to the Vice President Academic Affairs & Dean of Faculty (VPAA/DoF). A search for a new VPAA/DoF is currently underway. It is expected that the position will be filled in 2010.
 

Key Job Responsibilities:

As leader of the school, the Dean acts as a liaison between the faculty, staff and students, and the university administration. The Dean is the primary decision maker of the school in the administering of policies and execution of programs, and provides vision and leadership by:

  • Fostering distinguished records of professional development, teaching, and service to the engineering profession;
  • Providing sound administrative decision making and guidance consistent with the mission of the DCSE and Norwich University;
  • Fostering of cross-disciplinary partnerships and the facilitation of outreach and engagement activities;
  • Developing fiscal policy, preparation of budgets, and allocation of funds; • Following university policy on appointment, evaluation and dismissal procedures for faculty and staff;
  • Sharing with the faculty and staff impending decisions on policy, allocation of funds, appropriate personnel matters and all other matters of concern to the faculty and staff;

Performance Indicators:

First 6 months

  • increasing involvement with external organizations (state, regional, national)
  • increasing faculty participation in school governance issues
  • ensuring that the curriculum remains interesting, relevant, and current

At 6-12 months

  • increasing the endowment via external development opportunities

At 12-24 months

  • maintaining ABET accreditation and appropriate assessment procedures
  • increasing engineering enrollments
  • raising faculty standards and delivering higher professional development outcomes
     
Required Qualifications / Experience:
  • An earned Doctorate in Norwich University engineering or a closely related field;
  • Tenurable at an ABET accredited institution in a Norwich University Engineering discipline.
  • A minimum of five years of teaching experience in a Norwich University Engineering discipline or closely related field.
  • Experience in management and leadership demonstrated by success in an administrative position(s) in a university or in an equivalent executive position(s).
  • Vision, capability and experience to address the changes and challenges facing engineering education.
  • A commitment to enhancing undergraduate education.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience in fundraising.
Desirable Qualifications:

Experience with state and federal agencies; industry; national laboratories; patents; federal initiatives; technology transfer.

Demonstrated experience in strategic and short-term planning, program development, personnel management, team building, and working with professions related to the school.

Demonstrated advocacy for collaborative and broad-based engineering involvement with science and other disciplines to foster interdisciplinary outreach and research.

  • He or she will possess a demonstrated track record of progressive success working with faculty, staff, students and senior administration.
  • It will be vital for the Dean to be easily approachable, able to build consensus and when appropriate, decisive. He or she needs to be a leader that university constituencies will come to trust and respect.

The VPAA & DoF is a direct report to the President and is responsible for supervising the development, administration and evaluation of all academic curricula and academic support units. The VPAA & DoF is expected to provide personal and academic leadership that advances the institution’s goals of academic excellence and an outstanding learning environment for all students.

First 6 months

  • Learn the key elements of NU culture—its preferred work style by observing, listening and asking the questions. Begin to earn the trust and respect of all key constituents.
  • Provide leadership to and model the principles of our shared governance system, particularly in providing a voice for faculty perspectives in institutional decision making.
  • Provide leadership and information to engender faculty support for institutional decisions.
  • Lead the continuing discussion on the nature and extent of expectations for faculty to participate in scholarly activity and original research.
  • Provide academic program support for improvements in student retention.
  • Maintain full accreditation for the University and for the separately accredited academic programs, making maximum use of the self study process to improve institutional performance.

At 12-18 months

  • Understand the budget process. Continue to build trust and respect with all key constituents. Suggest and discuss approaches with President that will optimize faculty composition, performance and student:faculty ratio.
  • Lead the development and integration of a rigorous program of assessment of student outcomes in all academic programs.
  • Lead the continuing development of opportunities and recognition for research and scholarly activity.
  • Support the ongoing development of a robust program of leadership training for undergraduate students that is being led by the VP for Student Affairs.
  • Support the continued integration of service learning, internships, and community service either within or parallel to undergraduate academic programs.
  • Support the continued improvement of our campus climate in the area of diversity, inclusion, and respect for differences.

At 18-24 months

  • Lead the ongoing review and development of general education standards and outcome measures for all undergraduate students
  • Lead the ongoing examination of academic programs and degree offerings to see whether programs should be eliminated, enhanced, or added.
  • Lead the development and implementation of automation to improve efficiency and effectiveness in academic administration. Immediate challenges include implementing online registration, providing automated support for academic advising, improved automation of course and classroom scheduling, and realizing a return on our investment in electronic document management.
     
Qualifications / Experience: The VPAA & DoF will be a seasoned educator and leader with an earned doctorate or terminal degree who is qualified for appointment with tenure at the rank of professor. Superior candidates will have a record of excellence in teaching and scholarship; significant administrative experience commensurate with appointment at the vice presidential level; the ability to provide strong academic leadership and work effectively with faculty and colleagues in a shared governance environment; a strong, demonstrable personal and professional commitment to improving student learning through measurement and use of student outcomes; knowledge of and experience in distance education and online programs; and expertise and skill in the use of current information technology
