R&D and Innovation Leaders

We are currently working on several searches involving leaders for innovation, research and development. While it is still a buyer’s market for most hiring companies and universities, finding the right hired candidate for a key R&D and Innovation position is perhaps one of the greatest challenges. The hiring candidate needs to have the right blend of technical training and practical problem solving abilities as well as people management skills.

We recently completed an R&D leadership search for a specialty gases and materials company. It had to go fast so I engaged the hiring manager as much as possible in getting him to introduce me to the right people in his network so we could quickly reach the right group of candidates. The hired candidate was not looking when we reached her but she was receptive to learning about the opportunity. Once we ascertained that she had the right combination of technical and managerial experience—and a proven track record directing R&D projects—the hiring process went very quickly and the search was done in 60 days! This kind of outcome is possible when the client is really clear and the candidate is motivated.
