KDK Musings: Summer's End....Fall's beginnings

With the US Open beginning this week in New York City, tennis fans from all over the world will thrill to the exploits of the athletes who will compete with ferocity, persistence and amazing skill…it is always a great tournament.  If you are in the New York area over this or next week, I hope you will get an opportunity to head out to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadow; it is an experience of a lifetime.  As a long-time tennis player I have always enjoyed watching the world’s best compete just steps away from me on the many outside courts and also to see the likes of Djokovic, Murray, Williams or Wozniacki in one of the stadium venues.

Labor Day is right around the corner, and most summer vacations over, but the silver lining is that we can expect to enjoy a marked uptick in business activity.  Decisions that were postponed until “everyone is back” will now be taken.   As the 3rd Quarter wraps up and the 4th Quarter of 2013 commences, there will be increased pressure on the FED to tighten and curtail “Quantitative Easing”. The global financial market is not waiting for the other shoe to drop; rates are already increasing and the DOW has fallen below 15,000.   Should we be concerned about this?   As many financial and economic analysts have been saying, “this had to happen”.  The economy is firming up with each passing day.  The need for the FED to stimulate an economy that is clearly moving forward with steady confidence will diminish----witness the encouraging improvements in housing, GDP and employment.  But with this good news comes counter balancing actions; interest rates will go up somewhat and the DOW will be under pressure for the time being.

Back in January loyal readers of NEWS FROM….may recall that I predicted DOW 15000/15550 during 2013. Att the time of this soothsaying the DOW was 12925.  Some thought the DOW would fall back to 11,000 before it would go to 14,000.  The doomsayers are now saying that with rates increasing economic growth will falter and "watch out..the DOW could plunge!".  We are seeing an adjustment now, for sure but I think we will see DOW 16,000 before we see DOW 13,000.   There is still tremendous stimulus in the economy that will make that happen.  Are you considering building a plant or hiring additional workers now?  Why would you wait?  Rates are low, unemployment is still above average and demand is increasing as economic growth steadily churns along.  I think we are going to look back at 2013 as the year when the economic recovery finally became "official" as consumer confidence indicates it has.  It is my belief that this "Bull" market  has several years to run.  As we approach the presidential election of 2016, I think it will be very interesting to see who the Democratic candidate will be and who will receive the Republican nomination as well.  Both candidates will be promoting economic growth, STEM educational initiatives and entrepreneurship but with traditional ideological emphasis.  For now, let's hope current economic initiatives produce their intended outcomes.  I trust your university or business will benefit from sustained positive economic trends.

The Kulper family has had some great news this summer; our daughter Kendall was offered and accepted a book deal with publisher, Little Brown; it is a “2 book” contract.   Kendall writes “Young Adult Fiction” and her first book, which will come out over the next year or so, is entitled, Salt & Storm.  You can learn more about Kendall’s writing by visiting her website: .  As you can imagine, we are thrilled for Kendall and her wonderful husband Dave Toniatti; congratulations to them both!

Our son, Sloan, has begun his PhD fellowship at University of Hong Kong Medical School.  Sloan is working on researching new medical devices to help bring 21st century medicine to people in developing countries.   Sloan will earn work closely with his distinguished advisor Professor William Lu over the next few years.   Like his sister, Kendall,  Sloan has a website/blog where he posts updates about his activities…..check it out.

My wife Denise and I had a very active summer.  We visited our children and friends in Chicago and then spent some wonderful time on the Cape Islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket…and finished with a visit to Kiawah Island where the golf and tennis are amazing, the food is delicious and the low country environment is spectacular.

I hope you and your family had a great summer, too.

I am looking forward to talking with you about a key search need as we would love to assist your university or company attract and hire a great new leader for a key leadership role.
